I’m excited to announce that Kevin Quealy will be joining The Athletic as editorial director of Visuals and Data. Kevin joins us from The New York Times, where he has been a member of the Upshot since it was founded in 2014, including the last three years as its editor.

Kevin will lead a major expansion of our ambitions in visual, data and interactive journalism. This includes evolving the journalism itself, building compelling digital destinations, as well as working closely with the product team to create new ways to deliver fans the sports data they crave — scores, stats, schedules, standings and more.

Kevin will build on the excellent work of Skye Gould and our visuals team, which has greatly expanded the scope of our journalism with projects like The Beast and the popular NFL and college football playoff predictors.

Kevin’s love of sports has long been evident in his work at The Times. He and his colleagues created the NYT 4th Down Bot; an N.F.L. Playoff Simulator; live World Cup scenarios; an authoritative analysis of the impact of expensive running shoes; an exploration of the Tom Brady of other jobs; and a viral animation about Usain Bolt, among many other features.

Kevin is also a former athlete himself, having played Div. III soccer for Gustavus Adolphus College. He reports that he logged literally dozens of varsity minutes in 2001 and 2002.

Kevin will report to me and join the Masthead, starting at the end of August. Please join me in welcoming him to The Athletic.
