We are excited to announce that Eli Murray will be taking on a new role as a graphics editor on the Investigations desk.
Over the past two years, Eli has brought his impressive reporting and technical chops to some of the newsroom’s most impactful investigations, including migrant child labor, the groundwater crisis and DOGE’s efforts to remake the federal government. He helped engineer systems that underpinned The Times’s election analysis graphics and also mapped every shooting in America.
“Eli is a tenacious reporter who dives into a subject and tries to zero in on the sharpest angles,” said Archie Tse, who oversees graphics for The Times. “Earlier this year, Eli made calls day and night to find sources and uncover information about the secretive agency, DOGE. We’re excited to see how he applies his skills to Investigations.”
Eli joined The Times in 2023 from The Tampa Bay Times. While there, he was on the team that published a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into the life-threatening working conditions at a lead smelter. He also created a memorable visualization of how the Church of Scientology bought up real estate in downtown Clearwater, which won a Loeb Award for visual storytelling.
Eli grew up in rural Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in journalism. He taught himself to code by reverse engineering Times graphics and believes visual journalism is vital for reaching people in communities like the one where he grew up.
Eli lives in Harlem with his wife, Eleanor, whom he met while working at the University of Illinois student paper.
He will report to me. Please join us in welcoming him!
